About the college:

This very popular mixed sixed form college have about 1500 students on roll. The students are 16-18, full-time, and taking A level courses. The College has around 80 teachers and 40 members of support staff. The College has an Ofsted Outstanding status and one of the 'leading sixth form colleges' in England. As a sixth-form college, their ethos has always been similar to that of a sixth form in a school. They provide strong pastoral support and monitoring but also encourage independence in learning and study habits. The teachers are all expert in their subjects and well qualified. Many of their teachers have previously taught in other schools. Their exam results are consistently above the average for sixth form colleges. Whilst this is a source of some pride, they are aware that there is always work to be done to improve further.

About the Law Department:

In recent years, Law has become one of the most successful subjects at this College with almost all students achieving high grades. It is a subject which many students aspire to study and build their careers in after they leave and has also become more popular. This vacancy has arisen as a result. They teach the AQA specification which includes elements of the English legal system, criminal law, tort and a module on Human Rights. Alongside the subject content there is very much an emphasis on application of law to new scenarios, writing logically and accurately, and evaluating legal rules rather than simply learning them. It is important to be able to use current events to illustrate legal principles and a good knowledge of the UK political system is desirable.

Students are encouraged to develop an interest in and keep informed on legal issues and are taken to visit criminal proceedings in courts during their courses. Both their skills and awareness are raised through external speakers and recently, philosopher Julian Baggini spoke to all law students about his conception of the Good Society. The department is well resourced and the classroom used for this subject is in a block dedicated to Law teaching. The College has a well-appointed library, several bookable IT rooms and iPads for students to use. They are constantly trying to improve their teaching and learning and hope the successful candidate will bring ideas and enthusiasm for teaching Law in an interesting and innovative way.
