Job title: Head of Maths

Salary: MPS - UPS (+enhancements)

Location: Kent

Start date: September 2019

An inspirational Mathematics teacher is required to join and lead a very experienced department at a co-educational independent school in Kent.

The school is set in beautiful Kent countryside and benefits from spacious grounds. Central London is less than an hour's journey from the local station, as are Dover and the Channel Tunnel.

The school has exceptional pass rates at both GCSE and A-level, which are due to the quality of teaching and pastoral care, as well as the student's passion for learning. As a result, the school has developed a strong local reputation and is now beginning to gain attention from further afield, which means that pupil numbers are buoyant. The school is continuing to build and develop its facilities, having recently added a dedicated fitness centre, including an indoor swimming pool. The school is a Christian foundation with a strong community life. As such, all members of staff are expected to be in agreement with the Christian values and to attend

Chapel with the pupils. The School is well known for its high level of pastoral care for pupils and has an international reputation for the education of dyslexic children. Class sizes are small, rarely reaching more than eighteen pupils. An extensive games programme - made possible by the expertise and commitment of teaching staff outside normal lesson time - has led to the school enjoying considerable sporting success.

Full UPS1 is paid once teachers reach the equivalent of M4, whilst teachers on the traditional salary points M1-M3 receive 50% of this sum on top of their salary. Salaries are, therefore, especially favourable. The school also participates in the Teachers' Superannuation Scheme.

Being able to lead and work as part of a team is essential, as is the ability to share ideas and resources. You will be expected to teach Maths from Year 7 through to Sixth Form.

Specific Responsibilities of the Head of Mathematics:

  • Leading and managing the delivery of Mathematics within the curriculum throughout the school, revising and developing schemes of work regularly
  • Leading and managing the teaching team for Mathematics, monitoring learning and teaching, and overseeing target setting to ensure that all students are able to achieve their full potential
  • Overseeing all teaching and practice within the department to ensure that they are sympathetic to the needs of all pupils including the gifted and talented and those requiring learning support and in line with the school's ethos and policies
  • Developing and implementing policies and practices for the subject area, which reflect the school's vision, commitment to high achievement, effective learning and teaching and excellent student behaviour
  • Have a passion for and a good knowledge of current developments in pedagogy and practice, including an engagement in action based research
  • Teaching pupils across the age and ability range, following schemes of work and maintaining the highest standards possible
  • Establishing and implementing a strategic department development plan which is regularly monitored and evaluated to inform future planning.
  • Be responsible for the Mathematics component parts of the School's Strategic Plan as the School continues to develop
  • To manage all arrangements for Mathematics entry assessments and to undertake duties relating to the preparation of documentation relating to entry assessments.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
