With its expanse of greenery, incredible architecture and genuinely warm community of locals, it’s easy to see why Derby was voted one of the 25 top places to live in the UK.

Derby is widely known for its advanced transport manufacturing. It’s home to the world’s second largest aero-engine manufacturer, Rolls-Royce, as well as Derby Litchurch Lane Works, which was for many years the UK’s only train manufacturer. Toyota Manufacturing UK’s automobile headquarters is also located in Derby.

Of course with such an impressive reputation for transport to live up to, Derby is an easy commute. Situated in the middle of England, there are numerous links via road and public transport from nearby counties and London is just an hour and a half away by train. By road, Derby is 131 miles north of London via the M1 motorway.

Within Derby itself, the bus and train routes are plentiful and top of the line.

Living in Derby is inexpensive, with house prices being an impressive 68% lower than London on average. The cost of living is also much cheaper, which is beneficial as there are two shopping centres and a shopping district that includes a large range of shops, boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants.

Derby hosts numerous festivals each year, including the Derby Film Festival (one of the leading regional film festivals in the UK) and the Derby Comedy Festival. There is a thriving real ale scene for all the beer snobs and Alton Towers for adrenaline junkies.  If you fancy something a bit different Derby has many well dressing events, which is the decoration of springs and wells with pictures made from living plants and flowers. Unusual? Yes, but definitely iconic and fun!
